We made an aperiodic tiling on the beach!

The Spectre aperiodic monotile was an unexpected discovery in 2023.

An aperiodic tiling is when you cover a flat surface with copies of a single shape, without any repeating patterns.

Beaches are big and (mainly) flat and, famously, easy to do a bit of temporary building on. We made large “cookie cutter” tools in the shape of the spectre monotile, and covered a beach with the aperiodic tiling.

It's done!

Beach Spectres is done!

The weekend was a huge success. I'm enormously pleased with how it went and proud of everyone who helped to make it happen.

I've written an event report with photos from the weekend, and I've put together a stamper kit page with all the resources you need to do the activity on your own.
